Goatspell was started in New York City in 2018 in a tiny shared 72 square foot room in Woodside, Queens. The designer, Ash, wanted to bring their rich folk costume history back into style by re-imagining various Eastern European designs into modern gothic pieces. They are also heavily inspired by historical clothing, not just in design, but also construction techniques and textile choice. Combining these elements along with the idea of clothing as a magical glamour, Goatspell took shape.
Since then Goatspell has moved to Columbus, Ohio and enjoys a larger dedicated space. Each piece is designed and sewn in a one-person home studio operation by Ash. Please do keep in mind that that also means pieces will have individual characteristics, i.e. they were not made by a machine and may not be “perfect.” Think of this as thumbprints in an artists clay, as handmade items will always be beautifully unique and have the mark of a maker in every stitch.
Textiles are carefully chosen based on their environmental impact and longevity. When possible, vintage and deadstock materials are used. Each design is prototyped, and worn before it becomes available to ensure its comfort, integrity, and wearability.
